- HELP ON TROUBLESHOOTING
- (Also please read the Help on Installation section in this menu)
-
- Some programs on this CD-ROM may not run on all systems. The reasons
- vary depending on each system, but could include the following:
-
- SYSTEM MEMORY
- System memory is critical and is the main reason some programs will
- not work. Remember DOS has only 640K and when all of your drivers are
- loaded, including your CD-ROM drivers, there may not be enough memory
- for a program to run (especially DOS action games ). Try removing some
- device drivers from your config.sys and autoexec.bat files, or loading them
- in high memory. Your operating system may include Microsoft Memmaker
- which you could run to free up more base memory. Whether you are
- running DOS, Windows 3.1, or Windows '95, you may still need to free up
- base memory to run a DOS action game. For further information, please
- refer to your operating system manuals.
-
- NO SOUND
- The most common reason for no sound is that you have not configured
- the sound.exe or similar sound configuration file. Simply run this file and
- configure your sound card, in most cases this will solve the problem. If you
- are not getting sound from any programs, please re-install complete sound
- drivers - refer to your sound card and operating system manuals.
-
- ERRORS FROM SCORES
- CD-ROMs by definition are read only. If programs on this CD attempt
- to write back, for example: high scores, this will cause an error.
- These programs should be copied onto and run from a
- hard disk drive.
-
- RUNTIME MODULES
- Some Windows programs require a certain runtime module which must
- be installed into Windows in order to run the program. A runtime module
- is an additional program which you need to install into your Windows
- operating system. You don't have to worry about runtime modules unless
- you are missing one which is required to run a certain program. In most
- cases the program will include the module and install it as part of the
- program installation. Usually but not always, the program itself will tell
- you that you need a certain module. Be sure to read the requirements in
- the program descriptions which also tell you which runtime modules are
- required. If you are looking for a runtime module, the most common ones
- are included in this CD-ROM, just click on Runtime Modules on the menu
- system. Once a runtime module is installed, you can just leave it there as
- part of your Windows operating system.
-
- CONFLICTS
- Some programs will not run due to a system conflict created by a prior
- program you were running. This is why, when you have trouble running a
- program and have gone through the above items, always reboot your system
- before trying to run the program again.
-
- Remember, if you want to use a wide variety of programs, you need to
- acquire a basic knowledge of files, directories or folders (directories
- and folders are the same thing), memory, and operating systems.
